Featured: Journey to Mars Infographic

As NASA announces plans to send astronauts to Mars in the mid-2030s, the Journey to Mars graphics are front and center! The featured infographic was used as a backdrop to the press briefing at Kenedy Space Center and on NASA TV in preparation for the first flight test of the Orion spacecraft. The infographic was also featured as NASA.gov's "Image of the Day" and Sesame Street's twitter feed :-)

Featured: "NASA Science: A Journey of Discovery" iPad App

I have been fortunate to be a part of the team developing an iPad app to represent NASA Science. For the first release, the app features a mission from each of the four NASA directorates - Planetary Science, Earth Science, Astrophysics and Heliophysics. Below are screen shots of a side scrolling page for Mars Science Laboratory (MSL)/Curiosity, which was chosen to represent Planetary Science. Each mission has a uniquely designed, infographic style. The app was relased last year and is availabe for free download on iTunes.

Featured: Berta Rojas - Promotional photo shoot

Thanks to classical guitarist and international sensation, Berta Rojas, I've had the privilege of working in the photography studio. The photos featured here were taken for promotional products. The image above is Ms. Rojas on the cover of a Japanese magazine, Gendai Guitar. The image below on the left was used for the Festival Mundial De Guitarrras in Paraguay. This festival was a who's who of women in classical guitar. The theme for this segment was the classical "diva" - which required a red dress, dramatic lighting and alluring pose. The photos on the right with the white background were used on bertarojas.com. Please check out her photo galleries to see more of my photography.

Featured: SXSW 2013 Exhibit Graphics

SXSW (South by Southwest) Interactive 2013 is fast approaching, and I will be there this year! I've created a whole new suite of exhibit graphics for the NASA both, which I will assist in staffing.

The exhibit will highlight NASA interactive meida, including serveral projects I was involved in designing. Including - the "NASA Science: A Journey of Discovery" iPad app, "Mysteries of the Sun" eBook, "The Electromagnetic Spectrum" eBook, the SpacePlace app, and hopefully the first "Astrobiology Graphic Novel - Issue 2" (if I can finish it in time).

Featured: Sheep!

This is my second attempt at watercolor. I referenced a photograph I took on a farm in Amish Country, PA. Please also check out my first watercolor, "Jennifer," a portrait of a friend on her wedding day - thanks!

Drawing and painting has always been one of my favorite things to do. I would have loved to have majored in fine art in school, but it's difficult to make a living that way - unless you find a wealthy patron. Alas, nowadays I create art for fun, and to decorate my house :) Most of the paintings above are painted in oil or acrylic, with a couple mixed media pieces. The drawings are all pencil on Bristol paper. The question I get asked the most would be "How long does it take you to create one of these?" Well, that varies on size and medium. For a typical pencil drawing, I'd say about 16 hours. For an oil painting, about three months of working in my spare time.

I received the Exceptional Public Service Medal from NASA.

I have been supporting the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters for the past ten years. As a Multimedia Producer, I am able to tackle all sorts of design jobs, from websites to print and exhibits. Please feel free to take a look at my portfolio for samples of my work and visit LinkedIn or download my resume.

My philosophy on design is strongly rooted in fine art. I prefer to integrate content/layout with illustration, weaving the two together. I love telling a story with imagery and color -- in the end, that is what I believe will capture the public's eye, sometimes engaging them on a topic they might otherwise have ignored.

Working at NASA has been a dream job. Although there is an excess of beautiful images to work with, the challenge has always been collaborating with scientists and engineers to explain complex ideas behind these images to the general public. Over the years, public outreach has become one of my strengths. During my time at NASA, I have created numerous exhibits and print materials to engage the public. Recently I was tasked to create an identity package for the Mars Exploration Program and the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL)/Curiosity, which landed on Mars in August. I created a suite of products including a folder, bookmark, pin, sticker, brochure, etc., to be handed out at museums and events. Check out more of my accomplishments in my blog.

In addition to my design work, I also freelance in photography. I've had the privilege of working with classical guitarist Berta Rojas on her last two albums. I've also shot her at work in the studio and in other locations for promotional purposes. Beyond my professional work, I just really love playing with photography... and since I'm so well versed in Photoshop, I'm able to do some major retouching -- I could get in so much trouble :-)

I also have a passion for music! I've studied classical guitar since I was nine and continue to perform and compose. Please check out my music section to learn more about my musical endeavors.

Thanks so much for visiting my website!

Take care,

Jenny

My Recordings

Welcome to my musical diary. Since acquiring the equipment to record, I've made it my goal to document pieces I compose via recording. My setup includes one Rode NT1-A (Thanks Max!) and a used but in great condition MOTU 828 (Thanks Bryan!). I am currently using garage band software - pretty simple setup.

I've been playing classical guitar since the age of 9; got my start as a student of Skip Anna at Music and Arts, then studied throughout college with Mary Claire Ingalls at Towson University. A couple years ago I decided to take lessons again and purchase my dream guitar. My current teacher is Berta Rojas, the renowned Paraguayan guitarist and one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. She has truly brought my technique and musicality to a whole new level. The guitar I'm performing on is a Phillip Woodfield (an English luthier), series 1, and her name is Nausikaa (really, he gave her that name). She is a spruce top with Indian rosewood back and sides, and has a bright but deep, melodic sound. I also play flamenco guitar on an Amalio Burguet.

Stay tuned for more original music!

Bluegrass

For the past two years I have been a member of Stain Glass Blue Grass, a local band that mostly plays in churches and the occasional festival or event. I recently purchased an Eastman Dreadnought guitar, which has a great big sound (better for playing in groups than my classical guitar). I've also been singing - yes, singing - even lead on some pieces (scary, I know).

Choral Music

This year I decided to join a choir called the Ecumenical Traveling Choir. We will be traveling to Belgium this summer for the Ghent Music Festival!
